“Red on Green: A Sonnet”

eight sweaty bodies dart across a trail

speaking in roars of chainsaw voices
directing hikers to trees where notice signs are nailed
ligustrum, chinaberry, nandina: so many choices
and if you see pink stumps, leash your pet
Garlon 3A doesn’t taste so good
nobody needs another trip to the vet
when all you wanted was a walk in the woods
the ‘thank yous’ you left us are appreciated
and if you think our job is cool, we’re still hiring
our first time sheets are signed and dated
the work slowly becoming less tiring
if your belt is green
you’ll find our brush-piles on the scene
